Wildlife Corridor Database

There are now hundreds of wildlife corridors around the world – with more coming.  These are built to help wildlife cross safely across barriers, such as road, railways, and deforested areas.  But do wildlife corridors work?

We have compiled a database of wildlife corridors as a starting point to answer this question.  Below is a sample of the data available for scientists, policy makers, and designers to help gain insights into what makes corridors succeed – and fail.  Contact us for a copy of this database or to add to the information!

Christmas Island Crab Bridgemetal bridge over roadwayChristmas IslandAustraliaChristmas IslandRoadwayEvery first rainfall of the wet season (in Oct. or Nov.) triggers the migration of red crabs from the forest into the ocean to mate and spawn. Along the way, they are often hit by cars or face substantial barriers to movement and they can dessicate; high mortality. Néronde Bat BridgeU ‐ shaped metal structure with a grid parallel to the road was installed to help bats to better detect the overpass and to force them to fly at a safe height across the roadMillonnaisFranceAuvergne-Rhône-AlpesA89To mitigate the fragmenting effect of the road and restore connectivity, two overpasses (MP & TR) were placed within the bat commuting routes identified during the preconstruction EIA.2013Batstwo automatic acoustic recorders per site (Song Meter SM2Bat +, Wildlife Acoustics Inc.), one on each side of the overpass (henceforth referred to as a “pair”).Overall, our results show that bat overpasses are more successful when they are placed in a location with forested areas on both side of the road and that they are avoided when placed in open habitats such as farmland.A bat overpass is more likely to failhttps://structurae.net/en/structures/neronde-bat-bridge, https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/1365-2664.13288, https://www.conservationevidence.com/actions/978
