Methodology Notes

  • Additionality-only CO₂ accounting (July 2026 update): Only SN-funded planting and SN-funded natural regeneration are credited. Intact old-growth forest that SN purchased for protection is credited at 0 t CO₂e/ha/yr — it is a carbon stock, not a net annual sink, and standard carbon methodologies (VCS, ART TREES) track intact forest protection separately as avoided emissions rather than sequestration.
  • Land classification: Every hectare of SN-funded land is classified as Intact Forest, Natural Regeneration, Tree Planting (SN-funded planting on any land), or Other (plantable land planted by non-SN partners). Source: Saving Nature project database (March 2026) plus 2026 additions.
  • Planted hectares credited: Every ha SN funded planting on (regardless of land ownership) at 14.566 tCO₂e/ha/yr (Manes et al. 2022, active reforestation stratum). Applied to Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador plantings.
  • Natural regeneration credited: 9.035 tCO₂e/ha/yr (Manes et al. 2022, degraded land / natural regeneration stratum). Applied to Bioconservancy regen, Camaná, Leuser (Sumatra), Western Ghats, and San Cristóbal (assisted regen via invasive removal).
  • Intact forest (protected, not planted): 0 t CO₂e/ha/yr. Applies to Rio-Canandé (1088.58 ha), Bigal River (93.82 ha), Chucunaque (93 ha), Mashpi-Amagusa (50 ha), REGUA existing forest (68.6 ha), Mesenia intact forest (1,632.5 ha, outside PDD), and small parcels at Hoollongapar (0.54 ha).
  • “Other” category (plantable but planted by partners): AMLD (340 ha, restored by Brazilian Park Service after transfer), El Silencio (110 ha, restored by consortium). Not credited to SN because SN did not fund the planting.
  • Default planting density: 1,667 trees/ha where actual planting data is unavailable.
  • Natural regeneration density estimate: 800 trees/ha for regenerating land.
  • Trees planted counting rule: Every tree SN funded is counted, whether planted on SN-owned or partner-owned land (per Saving Nature project tracking method). Land purchased totals only include SN-owned hectares.
  • Quarterly planting data from REGUA and Bioconservancy reports used for 2023–2026 tree counts; older years use the Notes column from the Project Database.
